PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
WHAT NMS DOES
NMS is a PM program that monitors your FidoNet <tm> *.MSG format
netmail directory, looking for unread netmail addressed to your
FidoNet nodenumber.
NMS provides a button titled "EDITOR" in it's window. Selecting
this button will launch your favorite message editor. Your
message editor is defined to NMS in the configuration dialog. If
a message editor is not defined, this button will be disabled.
There are 2 sets of numbers in the NMS window. The numbers in
RED are the number of unread messages, and the numbers in BLUE
are the total number of messages in your netmail directory.
NMS, optionally, has a digital clock that displays the current
date and time. The display of this clock is controlled via an
option on the configuration dialog.
RUNNING NMS
NMS can be launched from the command line. Ideally, it should
be placed in your startup folder so that it is started
automatically every time your system is booted. Neither NMS or
it's companion program NMSCAN require any command line
parameters.
SCANNING FOR NEW MAIL
NMS scans for mail in one of 5 ways:
1. NMS automatically scans your netmail directory when it is
started.
2. The companion program, NMSCAN, will send a command to NMS to
perform the scan. Ideally you should launch NMSCAN at the
end of your inbound mail processing.
3. You can set a timer in the configuration dialog. When the
timer expires, NMS will scan for new mail.
4. The popup menu has an option that starts a scan for new mail.
5. If you launch your message editor with the "EDIT" button,
NMS will perform a scan when you exit your editor.
NEW MAIL NOTIFICATION.
If unread netmail is found, 2 possible alarms (one obnxious) are
invoked to notify you of the momentous event. Once an alarm has
been invoked for a particular message, the alarm will not be
invoked again for that message unless NMS has been stopped then
restarted.
You are alerted to new message arrival by 1 or 2 optional
alarms:
Flashing Window The window bar will flash when a new message
arrives. It will continue flashing, until
all unread messages are read, and NMS
performs a scan of the netmail directory and
no new unread mail is found, or the alarm is
manually turned off from an option in the
popup menu. When the window starts
flashing, 5 beeps will be heard.
Unfortunately, I have no control over these
beeps.
Audible Alarm An audible alarm can be sounded when a new
message arrives.
These alarms are optional and independent of each other. In
other words, one or both of them can be used for new mail
notification.
CONFIGURATION DIALOG
The first time NMS is launched, a configuration dialog is
invoked. The configuration dialog can also be invoked via an
option on the popup menu.
The configuration dialog request the following information:
Node Number This is your node number. A message is
considered addressed to your node if the net
and node match the net node entered here.
Netmail Path This is where your *.MSG format messages can
be found.
Mail Reader Defines your favorite message reader/editor.
If no editor is specified here, the "EDITOR"
button in the NMS window will be disabled.
Scanner Timer Sets the time interval between automatic
scanning of your netmail directory. If both
of these values are 0, no automatic scanning
will be done.
Check Boxes 3 check boxes control the following options:
1. "Display Clock" determines if the real
time clock will be displayed in the NMS
window.
2. "Alarm When New Mail Arrives" will sound
an obnxious audible alarm when unread
mail is found in the netmail directory.
3. "Flash Window Bar" cause the NMS window
bar to continually flash after unread
mail has been detected after a scan.
POPUP MENU
Clicking the right mouse button when the mouse pointer is over
either one of the message counts, will invoke a popup menu
offering several options:
Scan Manually forces NMS to scan for new unread
mail.
Configuration Invokes the configuration dialog.
New message reset Turns off the flashing window alarm. If a
message remains unread, the flashing will
not be turned on after a rescan unless, a
new unread message is found. In other words,
an alarm will only be sounded once for any
given message unless NMS is restarted.
Exit Terminates NMS. This is the only way to
terminate NMS.
Product information Brag dialog. Every PM program needs one of
these.
PROGRAM SUPPORT
Any question, bug reports, or suggestions will be gladly
accepted via netmail to my FidoNet address, 1:106/202. I also
monitor the OS2BBS echo and will answer any question there.
NMS from it enception was developed to be a netmail monitor. I
have no intention of including options or enhancements to scan
echomail areas for mail addressed to you.
PROGRAM DISTRIBUTION
The official distribution mechanism (aka FileBone) will be
FERNWOOD, as it is dedicated to the distribution of OS/2
software. All new releases of NMS will be hatched via FERNWOOD.
The most current version of NMS can always be obtained from
1:106/202 by requesting the magic name of "NMS".
